Do some manufacturers of embroidery patches use software that works from vector-based art rather than from raster-based art? I'm looking for the highest quality technology that can produce designs that resemble hand embroidery more than machine embroidery. I'm new to the subject. Please point me toward information on what distinguishes high-quality machine embroidery from lesser quality. Thanks in advance.

You have multiple questions rolled into this thread. Hmmm...
There are digitizing programs out there that use vector art to create a sew file. DRAWings is one example. ALL patches have to be created by a digitized sew file. Most companies can use a vector or raster file to create the sew file.
You would need to tell the digitizer what type of effect you would need. If you are looking for a "hand stitched" look, then just let them know. The sew file would tell the machine to stitch differently and produce the look you are looking for.
I'm sure there are some good digitizers on this forum but I have used Mike over at ChinaEmb.com for a couple of years. He does all my digitizing and does a lot of work in patch designs.

Nathan, Thanks for your reply. The company you recommend accepts artwork in bitmap formats jpg and .gif. Can you please explain where the vector art comes in? Would we be better off starting with vector art that we created rather than sending it to a digitizer to convert a bitmap to vectors? Which approach yields top quality?
And is a digitizer someone different than a manufacturer? Do I need services of both entities?
And, lastly, are there manufacturers who also provide packaging? Is that standard or is it better to receive the patches in bult and assemble the packaging ourselves?
Hope these aren't too many questions.

Mike takes both vector and bmp. His website states jpg, bmp, etc... because most people understand what that is. The average consumer does not know what a vector image is or what makes it different. I have sent him eps files with no problems.
To get good embroidery, it really doesnt matter which format you send to him. He uses Wilcom and will be creating the sew file from the image you send. Unlike screen print which demands vector art for good output, digitizing does not require it. Different process entirely.
I've only dealt with Mike on patches so I cant answer the packaging question. Sorry about that one. My preference would be to receive packaged and ready to go. Contact Mike and tell him I referred you. He is a good guy and will answer all your questions.
