We're in the process of getting a compressor for an incoming auto and turns out our new shop has three phase power in it. Is there any benefit to getting a three phase over a single phase compressor? We're looking at 7.5 hp and have the option of either one. Experience? Suggestions? More cost effective?

Re: single or three phase for compressor
Three-phase machines and controls can be smaller, lighter in weight, and more efficient than comparable single-phase equipment. More power is supplied to them in the same period than can be supplied by a single-phase power circuit.
However, the trade-off for this advantage is that three-phase machines and controls are more complex and expensive.
so really depends on how often the compressor is going to be on.. Luckily you already have it installed which usually is a pretty large expense up front.
