I am doing the same thing.
Look into an Epson 4880 which can do sub dye, heat transfers and film positives with the MultiRip software. I just purchased these and am going to run 'em this weekend.

Atlas Screen Supply has a complete floor model package on sale right now and might be worth a look. They are asking about $3300 but maybe you can talk them down a few hundred dollars more. Pro Digital Gear has the Epsons for $1695 so maybe you can use that as leverage for more $$$ off the demo model.
However, make sure they have been printing with it since it has been idle otherwisse the ink can gum up... especially the dye sub.

As for a heat press, the best bang for your buck seems to be the Geo Knight DC16.
It has swappable attachments to do mugs, plates and cubes. The price of the attachment is cheaper than a whole dedicated (mug) press for example.

Good luck finding them used... another few days and I'm gonna bite the bullet and order one. Prices range from $1100 to $1195 but make sure you go with a place that offers free shipping... at 140 lbs it is light enough to go UPS (another consideration) but still gonna cost you. Would be better to pay MSRP/ no tax/ no shipping than to end up paying $150 in freight.

Good luck!
