I use a epson r1800 with a rip, depending on your budget you can go with the following and get great results with each.. you also have the option of lasers..
epson-r1800
epson-r1900
epson-3000
epson-2200
epson-1520
epson-r1400

lasers... these are postscript printers and DO NOT need rip software

I'm not going to say it's the best, but the Epson 3000's are reliable, easy to fix and can be had cheaply.

I would agree with inkbrigade on this one. Our epson has ran solid for over two years not one issue. If your on a budget look at the epson 1400/ accurip combo. It's an all black system that sets up easily and is very very dependable. If you have a larger budget, and want to print from a roll feed system, look at the 4880. most larger shops Ive' seen use the 4880 system. Anyway I hope this helps.
