Where do I start?

United States

Hello -

I am a new member to this forum. I am a single parent, employed full time and have been doing machine embroidery on a home embroidery machine for about the last 4 years. I have been pretty lucky in that, a lot of what I have done has sold and sold well. I'm not in a position right now to quit my job and do this full time, however, I am looking into the possibility of picking up a small, used commerical machine so that I can produce and sell more items faster than I can on my little Babylock.

If anyone can point me in the direction of where to start - I live in suburban Pittsburgh. I know of a local Brother and Babylock dealer but of course, they are going to promote only their brand of machines. I've read a lot of good things about the Tajima and Barudan brands - if anyone can offer advice on that, I'm open.

A family member has offered to finance a used commerical machine. I'd like to purchase direct from a company so that I can get training on how to use the machine correctly. Is a business plan necessary? I'm not interested just yet in opening my own business. For now, I'd like to be able to make enough items to have on hand and so that I can attend area craft shows. Start small and grow the business from there and from the people who already purchase items from me.
