Digitizing question

I was just wondering if anyone knows... is it normal to charge "additional fees" to change a digitized file from a DST to EXP? I am a graphic designer and I know that it doesn't take anything to re-save a file in a different file format, so it surprises me that our digitizer is claiming that we will have to pay more for this service.

I wouldn't charge anything. Are they doing anything else besides changing the format?

No, I just needed the format changed! If it was a complete redo, then I could understand the additional fees. Their exact words were "it will have to be completely redigitized". That just didn't sound right to me.

I can do it free for you.

But let me clear that if you need converted from Pulse format to Wilcom (It may be that your digitizer said in that case)

In the embroidery world it's normal to charge additional fees for everything. The problem is that you see someone just saving a file. The embroidery professional sees... Rent, employees, materials... Then add to that Tajima software of like 5-10 thousand dollars and you can see why they will charge anyone and everyone they come in contact with. Embroidery stuff is expensive. It doesn't have to be but for most they get a Tajima rep and get a whole package with a new machine and the software to boot. It's a big loan to pay off.

FWIW, You can also avoid all that expense and download and install wilcom trusizer free version and convert yourself. It's easy and all it takes is a little time. OR you can pay for the convenience of not having to do all that. Or you could go to someone like me who doesn't value his time much who does it on the side and will just do favors in order to get what business you can throw my way. No it's not a plug for my 'business', just saying... they're all valid charges and views.

You may have to be clear on what you want as far as the file goes. A lot of times people are looking for .EXP files to be just like a .DST or PES... stitches. But EXP is also a digitized format save file. It's my understanding that pretty much every different software uses different formats for saving their files. I'm assuming that wilcom uses .EXP. I don't use it, but this is what I found when having to convert a file to .EXP when someone asked for that format. I was awfully careful to let them know that the .EXP file I was providing was stitches only and not the digitizing file. I think most would just want the stitches... but I could also see the real need for the actual design file too. You may just want to clarify that to him just to be sure. Again, Wilcom trusizer is free for download and you can convert any file to .exp if that's what you're looking for.

Thank you very much for your info! I will look into that Wilcom free download - sounds like that might be the way to go. It is actually for a customer who has her own embroidery machine at home, so all she needs is the stitches.

If I digitized the file, there would be no charge to re-size it. But if someone else digitized it, then it would be a $10 edit fee.
