Inexpensive digitizing?

I might be buying a used Brother embroidering machine from my sister-in-law to do some hats for me and my friends, it only does one color at a time and I dont have time or desire to do anything commercial with it even if I could.

What I have is a few logos that I'd like done . . but I can't afford to dish out $1000 for software just to digitize a dozen images. Are there any reasonable digitizing programs for home use?? I don't need any bells or whistles, it doesn't matter if they come out perfect.

The cheapest program I could find online was SubStitch, and that's costs almost as much as I'm paying for the machine itself! It does come with the "magic box", can I digitize with that? The computer she had it installed on was broken so I couldn't check out any features.

Any help would be GREATLY apreciated!
