I just purchased a Bernina 790 quilting/embroidery machine. I am green as goose poo in the spring! I know absolutely nothing about embroidery. I would like to purchase software to be able to digitize photos and designs. The Bernina Software 8 is incredibly expensive. Are there other brands that will work with my machine that are just as good and less $$$$?

Hatch Digitizer is on an incredible special at the moment for $799.00. But I must warn you that you are like a beginner pianist wanting to play concert pieces when you still haven't mastered the basic scales. And I do not mean that in a bad way. It means good digitizing takes time and practice. You can get A result from auto-digitizing, but it usually needs LOTS of editing to get it to run well.
Congratulations on your machine.

Thank you!
Re: Newby
I agree with AlisonB. sorry. since you just got the machine PRACTICE using it.... get some stock designs and just sew them out over and over on paper or scrap fabric. You don't know what you don't know. AFTER you feel proficient on the machine side THEN I could see you getting into digitizing.
But for the cost of the software it would be cheaper just to order your digitizing from others that have the experience. ONE you will hopefully achieve the look you are going for and TWO you get to keep your hair (not pulling it out in frustration) ha.
