time to become proficient?

How many hours of training/practicing did it take for you to become proficient enough to produce marketable items?

Also, do you feel a person can be successful as a home based part-time business or does it need to be full-time to be successful?

Thanks!

When our children were smaller, we operated a home-based embroidery business so "momma" could stay home with the kids. She was able to have grandparents watch children occassionally & we made an appreciable amount of income part time. Your sucess will directly relate to the time & effort you put into the business. Marketing to a target customer can help.

I would say it would be good to work for someone and learn the process in a perfect world but if you are unable to do so, watch videos on the net you can buy dvd's that explain the process. You can do quite well just as a part time home based business you don't have to go full time and like others had said it just depends on your efforts and goals. I got into the business with no experience and taught myself basically. Practice making some shirts for yourself wash them and make sure they hold up before offering your services to the public. If you have an opportunity to go to a trade show they are awesome! You'll get a bunch of connections and you can take seminars and workshops to teach you the ins and outs of the business.
Hope this helped

Hi Ashley,

Many people have home based businesses in this industry of embroidery/screen printing/ promotional products/ digitizing and do quite well. I guess it depends on what your goals are as far as income, but still , you have to start somewhere! My suggestion, however, would be to work for others first to learn as much as you can instead of wasting time re-inventing the wheel so to speak.....(unless you have this experience already) and also to attend a tradeshow or two first.
Personally I started as a machine operator at at small company and then moved into digitizing there and then management at a very large promotional products company ... only to eventually leave that security to open my own... out of a spare bedroom.... that was 8 years and many many deposits ago! So you can do whatever you set your mind to... just have a good foundation first, please.
