Odd instructions for a Digitizer

Robert Young's picture

another thread talks about giving measurement instructions to the ten thousandths of an inch.. but what about color instructions such as this one presented this morning to us:

"Berk - pms201 + K (However the bars on either side gradate from 201 build to 0-100-63-85 Sig - pms147 + K"

this was all that was written for a left chest design. I am assuming this is some secret code you screen printers have, but for a digitizer.. .uh.. not so much. lol :D

client wants to know if we "cand" send designs in "talgima"

Well were you able to I also have to ask you what is talgima I guess I’m not good enough I might’ve had to ask them if they could use it for a Tajima in DST But they would probably be offended by my ignorance

Come on ROBERT asking people not to be stupid it’s like asking them not to breathe don’t you know the extra secret button on the keyboard that makes the backgrounds whatever color you want them to be without stitching

this just came in on a 3 yr old design:

"The logo is to big. I want it he same size and the letterin is to fat. and make the key skinner on the bottom"

design is 3.5 inches wide, but no instructions as to what size the client would like. making it smaller will make the lettering automatically thinner as well, so not sure if that will be enough or no.

Oh joy - I am not the only one to get cryptic instructions. I have, in the last 2 days, received jpgs of designs, with the instructions to "make them pocket-sized!" The picture sent this morning was a tiny photo taken with a mobile phone!!!! When I SPECIFICALLY ask for SOME sort of size - ie. max width 9cm - I get the same "pocket-sized" answer. I will do what I want and ANY editing of size will be charged for. (even if it's only ten thousandths of an inch :) )

Max size for pocket is 4"W

ah, but even that can be changed... here in Texas we have done some left chest designs 5 or even 5.5 inches wide! when you get into XXL and larger then the usual design sizes do not apply.

Normal jacket backs look awfully tiny on larger jackets.:D

EDIT:

"There are thousands of threads left on the back after embroidering, Is it possible to knot and clip all of these so there aren\'t so many threads left to cut at the end?"

They are referring to the tails left on the backside of the embroidery from the trimmers and does not understand why the machine leaves those... why can't the machine trim those

"No address and phone number below the design in a straight line!"

they added the exclamation point... am thinking they mean delete the address and then add the phone number below in a straight line... but could be wrong as the instructions are not clear. The art has the address and number to the side of the logo.

"I told you to do the design in 2 colors (white and gold)... the black on the art was to be the black hat showing through... but we messed up 60 hats that were not black because you did not fill in the black areas with thread"

Hard to argue with someone who is so right!!!

today, no image of the sewout, so not sure what really needs to change, but here are the instructions:

"We sewed this out on a cap and it looks bad. Our production team thinks if we reduced the size by 10% it should work"

yes, making embroidery smaller usually makes it sew MUCH better. ???

todays blog post. lol: for a quote:

Please quote the following straight-line embroidery layout: (OTF_Splat.png)(Orangetheory_Fitness_Logo_Linear.jpg WITHOUT \'Orange\')(Parker, Colorado) So it will be the orange splat next to \'THEORYFITNESS.COM\' and a space before the text \'Parker, Colorado\'

Instructions on an order:

"Run seam longitudinally around inner circle for clean edge to that circle."

design is just a solid square fill with a satin circle in the middle of the square... very simple. What do you think they mean?

Just using big words to mean put the correct underlay?

The sad truth is that most customers (and even in-house sales people) are often too stupid, lazy, or both, to write full and simple instructions.

The most frequent 'errors' I come across are:

Q. What size should the logo be? A. Left breast sized...
Q. Can you make it half the size? A. Half what size? Length or area? Response...Huh?
Q. Can you supply high resolution artwork? A. Will this 20 pixel Gif do?
Q. Can you embroider in Pantone 253? A. Pantone is printed ink on white paper...'blank expression'...never mind

From client: "They have requested changes to this original design, and I\'m not sure they\'re do-able. If changes can be made, would you let me know, and then I can let you know what they are asking, and we can see if they\'re realistic"

without knowing WHAT changes the end user would like to their design how can anyone tell you anything?

What do you think? am I missing what they are asking? I want to know if you can digitize something? no, I don't know what yet... but answer the question... can you digitize? yeah? ok, I want this 200 page book put on a left sleeve please. WHAT? you said you could digitize!@$#

today a client sends back a 3 yr old design with this question: "do you think this tape will work on Ogio backpacks, or would you suggest editing?"

Firstly I am sorry but was not aware that Ogio backpack material was considered "common knowledge" in our industry? so I googled the product and learn they come in several fabrics... so really at a loss how to answer the client.

(note , I say 3 yr old design, not that it matters, just pointing out that designs can have a long lifespan... whereas digitizers get 1 payday)

Client has a design we digitized for left chest a couple of years ago. Today they want us to digitize the logo again because now they want to sew it on the yoke at the same size... Same shirt their client ordered as a uniform before.

Scratching head... same material, but for some reason they believe they need to pay again?

Robert - you could write a book! I don't digitize but recently had a request to add a white border around an entire design. That request isn't odd in itself but what happened was the customer uploaded a jpeg to SanMar's Design Tool and removed the white pixels. The Design Tool removed most of the white pixels but left a thin border surrounding the design. My customer saw the remaining pixels as a border, liked the look and decided that he could order dark garments for his otherwise dark logo. For some logos that would have worked but no way for this detailed design!

Client DEMANDING 2mm tall lettering be legible with them using 40wt. UH, OK.. NOT there is no room within this very involved design to enlarge the lettering they are referring to. so it either needs to be deleted OR placed above and below the design OR enlarge the entire design to allow for running stitch lettering? OR enlarge to Jacket back size to allow for satin lettering.

Sorry, thread has a certain thickness and while we would LOVE to put the Declaration of Independence on a postage stamp in embroidery, it probably cannot happen. lol

Client sends a design in for a quote telling us every spec of the scarf to be sewn.. height , width, material, thickness, color, and that it has tassles. I ask what size they would like to sew the design so I can quote accurately. They respond that whatever size we think would look the best will be fine. So I quote at 3 inches wide as that is as small as the lettering will allow. They want to know what is wrong with me.. why would I not quote it 8 inches wide as the scarf is 10 wide and that size would allow 1 inch on either side to hoop.

UH? I did ask up front. I chose to go with the smallest possible as that is what many clients prefer. But don't come back like we are idiots because we could not read your mind and you were too stubborn to advise us!

Today: quoting a design for a hat. Here is my comment:

"this is quoted 4.25 inches wide with all white areas on the art left open for the fabric to show through"

Client's response:
"we are NOT sewing on fabric... we are sewing on hats!"

cool.. are the hats made from cardboard or tin or are you just always in a bad mood on Mondays?

2015 has started, and so has the interesting comments!! Quoted a design this morning : "Design is quoted 2.5 inches wide, the minimum size this lettering will allow"

Client responds... "ok if we do it at 2.5 inches wide will we still be able to reduce it 25% and have it work?"
