Rayon vs. polyester embroidery thread

Being new to embroidery, I know I have much to learn. Can somebody please tell me what's the deal for having two threads that are exactly the same color and thickness but one is rayon and the other is polyester? Is it all about preference or price? Help out a newbie!!!

Thanks

Welcome to the forums Andrew :)

Polyester thread - Its strength allows for faster machine speed with less thread breaks. It can tolerate rougher laundering conditions (bleaching, detergent, hot water) and which makes it great for workwear and sportswear. It's cheaper, however since polyester is petroleum based, that may change in the future. Better shelf life.

Rayon thread - It's more lustrous and has a more silky sheen; perfect for more delicate clothing. It's less elastic, thus it stitches better which allows for more intricate details. There is more color selection.
