I am having a problem when using sticky backing. I can't keep the thread from breaking when I use it. I have a large order for patches on my one head machine and I need to use the sticky backing to make them. How do I keep the thread from breaking when I do this. these patches are in three sizes, 3.5'' 8'' and 11'' I will be sewing the circle to place the patch on the backing then sewing again to lock it in. then sewing the patch which has 98% coverage. any ideas?

Re: sticky backing problem
Cleaning your needles will also help as well as applying Sewer's Ease (available at fabric store). Some sticky backings have more tack than others so you may want to try a different backing.

Re: sticky backing problem
We are doing a large number of items that require the use of adhesive backing, in addition we are using an applique made with a pressure sensitive twill cut on our vinyl cutter. This is a double hit of adhesive. With a piece of wax paper on the back of it all we have had no problems with running these items. Without it we were having gummed up needles, thread breaks and many related problems, now they run at 900 spm start to finish with no stoppages at all.
Wax Paper is an amazing addition to embroidery.
Re: sticky backing problem
Believe it or not, waxed paper. Plain old waxed paper found next to the Saran Wrap and the foil. Because of the nature of what I do, I always put a layer of waxed paper under everything...keeps the sticky & the velvet fibers from building up (the trend in Irish dance dresses now is velvet), and it seems to keep things lubricated enough that even my metallics break rarely. Simple solution. Wrote about it here: http://taoknitter.wordpress.com/2009/05/15/waxed-paper/

Jeez, I had forgotten about that. I even have the waxed paper in my embroidery stuff, but I was thinking it only was for the metallic. Thanks much.
