Hi, I'm a newbie and having trouble embroidering a 5 panel structured hat. Any help in needle size or other tips would be appreciated. The material is very stiff and the backing is like a heavy buckram. Thanks, in advance.
Re: structured hat help
Usually 5 panel caps are used for screenprinting, embroidery use 6 panel.

Re: structured hat help
Karen, thank you. I didn't realize that. Another lesson learned. :(
Re: structured hat help
I almost alway use a 75/11 needle but a 80/12 will work better if you are having trouble. Some people pre-steam stiff hats so they are easier to hoop. Slow down machine speed. What specific problems are you having, needles breaking, poor registration?

Re: structured hat help
Thank you, Jennifer. Someone had e-mailed me the same suggestions and it helped alot. They are definitely not my favorite type to stitch.
Re: structured hat help
I would recommend using a Teflon Coated 80/12 needle, slow down to @600 spm and work up. Embroidering a 5 panel has always been great, have more registration problems with low crown 6 panel hats due to seam in center but have learned to work around that. Also we do not use any backing on a "Structured" Cap" They have always sewn out very well without.
