Forums:
Have you sewn lettering or detail work on Top of a section of 3D foam that is already sewn?
Like a rectangle with lettering on top?
Or an airplane that is 3D but you sew the detail work on top?
Or parts of an animal or bird?
If so... special needles? Silicone spray the cone of thread? Or just chug along no problem?

i've never had a request for anything like that. i'd like to see what happens tho. if you experiment post the results!

I have never done it myself but I have a client who's company got hats that "sort of" did or tried, it had puffy under 2 parts of the artwork unfortunately one of those parts overlaps the other part 3 times. So it came out terrible.
Personally I would never try it unless I had one of the newer Embroidery machines like the tajima TMAR type 2 or the newer barudan or zsk with presser foot controls, and carefully adjusted tensions. Even then I'd be worried about pull against the satin top stitch on the puffy.

I have recently attempted this both on top of the foam as well as attempted a fill on foam (never seen/heard of anyone attempting it)

Yes I have. I've done the outline of a letter in one color 3mm and the inner part in 4mm. Chug along using 85/13 Gros Beckert sharp point needles at the super speed of 400spm. Outer part of the letter overlaps the inner part creating a 2 layer effect. Expensive to do because of the time, 1.2 to 1.7 per hour per head. Not much demand because of cost.

I will experiment with that... have never seen it but could see it applicable to some custom fabrics we work on. thanks!
