Which machine to purchase for home based business

Hello,

I am new on this forum so I apologize if this is not posted in the correct spot.

My wife is interested in starting a small home based embroidery business and we are researching machines. Since there are so many people out there with expertise and more knowledge than us I am hoping to get some input that will make the start up and learning easier.

We have ruled out combo sewing/embroidery machines and are wanting a embroidery specific machine. There seem to be quite a few used ones out there but we want to get one that is fairly user friendly.

We have looked at the Brother PR 620 and it seems like it might be a great intro machine. Any thoughts on this? Should we look at anything bigger or more robust? Most the work she wants to do is basic monogramming and maybe some small logos or patchwork. She doesnt seem to have any interest in doing large jackets, etc.

Any help would be appreciated. Which machines are the easiest to use and learn. Are there any used models to stay away from. Of course if you happen to have a PR 620 or something else that would make sense for sale please let me know.

Thanks...

Christian

We did something very similar, started a home based company. If you are only going to run strictly one color or rarely 2 color designs, you can get away with one of the small sewing/embroidery machines depending on the sewing field size you want.

If you are going to be doing multi-color designs (which we are), the PR600 series are great machines... we have 2 of them, they are complete work horses. Don't forget to include the cost of software when you are pricing things, the software isn't cheap!

Another thing to check... if you have a local dealer, see if they have a trade-in program. The shop we bought ours from has a program where if you upgrade within a year, they will credit the entire purchase price towards the new machine. We bought a small Babylock sewing/embroidery machine as a second machine, then traded it in about 9 months later towards a second PR600. Since we were planning on buying the 2nd machine anyway, we essentially got a cheap/free loaner for 9 months that we used for running free standing lace designs.

Finally, if you really think you are going to need a larger machine down the road, look at one of the compact 12 or 15 needle machine from SWF, Barudan, etc. They generally have a much larger sewing field than the PR600 series and designs with a lot of colors aren't as frustrating... We opted to go much bigger as a 3rd machine and bouight an SWF-E/1501T 15 needle machine that has a 14x16 sewing area... great for doing jackets...
